Food: A Key Factor for Health
There are many schools of thought on the subject of nutrition for dogs. For our dogs, we combine a small amount of corn and soy-free kibble with a variety of raw meats and vegetables.
The kibble we prefer is the Kirkland brand found at Costco. It is superior in many ways to the high end foods. The expensive foods are often charging a big price while including corn and/or soybeans particularly within the first five ingredients listed on the package. Corn and soy are almost always genetically modified which raises questions about its healthfulness. Corn is a common allergen for Goldens often causing skin problems which may later develop into more severe health issues. Soy is said to be added to increase the protein, however soy is not a usable protein for dogs (it’s even in question for humans).
We have obtained an assortment of raw meats (and especially organ meats) from a host of sources. Just use your imagination on this one. We put out the word that we are looking for livers and hearts and you can’t believe how many of our friends are anxious to unload them from their freezers. Wild meat is often available in the fall. Some people like to get rid of their “old” meat when they need room for fresh meat in the freezer. The bones are terrific for our very “oral” breed and they can chew on the big ones for days (preferably outside). There are butchers who are glad to have you come and get the parts they can’t sell but you have to track them down. Nowadays the grocery stores are happy to wrap up junk bones and sell them to you for a price – and that’s okay if you are willing to pay.
We supplement with some brewer’s yeast that we get from www.azurestandard.com. We get our probiotics, enzymes and non-pharmaceutical wormer from www.theholistichorse.com.
