Is a Golden Retriever Right For You?

Golden Retrievers are a popular family and hunting dog. The AKC registers over 65,000 of them yearly. However, evaluate your own situation to know if a Golden is a good fit.

Here are some guidelines:

1. Goldens LOVE people and want to be with you. Do you have time to spend with your pup?

2. Goldens are shedding year round but especially in the spring. Daily brushing helps but a fastidious housekeeper will go crazy. Not that they require special grooming but just brushing, nail clipping and regular hygiene for ears and teeth.

3. Goldens are friendly and gentle so don’t make good watch dogs. But they won’t chomp on your child’s hand if it’s in their food dish.

4. The word “retriever” is in their name which means they will be carrying something around for most of their waking hours. But it’s a good start for a hunter!

5. Goldens are amenable to training BUT they can have lots of energy so need a person who will consistently train them.
