Preparing for Your New Puppy
1. Crate - Most essential tool for housebreaking, travel, and security for your dog. Size: approximately 2 ft. by 3 ft. floor and 24 in. to 28 in. high. Either molded plastic (with metal door) or heavy wire depending on availability and/or preference. Baby gates help to confine puppy to kitchen or utility room for first few months.
2. Stainless Steel Dishes - Two dishes, one for water and one for food. Size: 2 or 2 ½ quarts is adequate. They may chew up a plastic dish.
3. Collar - Nylon web or rolled leather buckle collar. Use choke collar or Sullivan’s training collar just when you are training.
4. Six foot Lead and Ten foot Lead - We use polypropylene hollow rope but you must have gloves as the rope is very hard on hands.
5. Toys - Must be of hard rubber such as Kong type. Nyla bones work well. Rawhide and large uncooked beef bones are a big hit. Goldens love to chew so make sure they have their own toys to chew and not yours. Table and chair legs aren’t safe around puppies so if you aren’t watching the pup better to crate him.
6. Veterinarian - A good vet is necessary. If you can get that established before you bring the puppy home, then there is no “looking” if you need one. Ask your breeder and ask your friends who are pet owners for their recommendations. Also ask them why they like their vet.
